Border Gavaskar Trophy started in 1996 and numerous legends have blessed this trophy with scintillating performances over the years. India lead 10-5 in series tally against Australia and will embark on the 17th edition of the trophy in a week.
Let's look at the best performances in the history of this rivalry.
#4 VVS Laxman (2001)
The legendary win at Kolkata while following-on needs no introduction. Apart from the record-breaking 281, VVS had 3 fifties in rest of the 5 innings in the series.
With a contribution as high as 27% in team runs, he proved to be the point of difference in the series which hosts won 2-1.
#3 Matthew Hayden (2001)
Only instance of a batter scoring over 30% team runs in a BGT series. He scored 549 runs at an average of 110 where the second best average was only 48 by Steve Waugh. One of the most prominent carryjobs in an away Test tour in which he ended up on the losing side.
#2 Steve Smith (2017)
Smith registered one of the finest tours in India by a visitor after scoring 499 runs at an average of 71 on rank turners. His century at Pune on a pitch which was practically a minefield is easily among the Top 5 knocks in India played by a SENA player. It's also notable that Ashwin-Jadeja were at their peak and playing in their comfort zone.
#1 Virat Kohli (2014)
This series turned out to be a turning point in Kohli's career. After having a forgettable England tour earlier that year, he redeemed his Test reputation in style by contributing a staggering 25% team runs with added pressure of captaincy which came in the middle of the series. With 4 centuries, his 692 runs on the tour is still a record in an away BGT.
